Graduate Application Process

Students seeking admission to a master's program must first apply through the university's normal admissions process before being eligible for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. The UCB Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Program invites candidates to apply for scholarships after the admission process for a graduate program has commenced.

Which Master's Degree program?

**Please note that bachelor and doctoral programs do not qualify for the Scholars Program at UC Berkeley.

MBA students should secure additional funding from Haas Business School by receiving a Haas Scholarship. This is subject to meeting the first round application deadline. Please contact us if you would like to learn more about this unique process.

Am I Eligible for the Scholarship?

Being a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country: This includes Africans who are refugees or displaced within the African continent. This scholarship is not intended for citizens of North African countries. Those with dual citizenship, asylee, refugee or permanent resident status in the US, Canada, UK or EU are not eligible.

Having academic talent: All prospective Scholars must first be admitted to a UC Berkeley master's degree program to be considered for the Scholarship. An important criteria for admission to the University is demonstrated academic excellence.

Demonstrating leadership potential: The Program seeks those committed to developing the skills and mindsets associated with transformative leadership, i.e, that which engages others in an ethical manner to generate positive and lasting change.

From a Disadvantaged Socioeconomic Background:

This scholarship is for highly gifted individuals who are otherwise unable to obtain quality continuing education.

If you have demonstrated a commitment to giving back to your community, country or continent:

We are looking for well-rounded students who are enthusiastic about activities outside the classroom. Some may be directly related to your field of study, but this may also include other topics you work on and are passionate about (society, economics, politics). Applicants must demonstrate their achievements both in their application to the University of California, Berkeley and in subsequent scholarship applications.

We have expressed a desire and willingness to return to our home country after completing our studies:

We are passionate about issues that affect our communities and enjoy our education at UC Berkeley looking for students Knowledge and training to address these issues upon return. While significant work can be done from abroad, the program aims to enable scientists to return home after making valuable professional contacts through internships, academic training and job search.
