Our research awards program helps build individual competence and careers by funding academic study and mobility, research, complementary skills development, and practical experience.

If your research proposal is accepted, you will participate in the IDRC as a research winner for 12 months from 1 May 2023 to 30 April 2024 to conduct research on the submitted topic. You will gain practical experience in managing and supporting research and programs, administering grants, and creating, disseminating and leveraging knowledge from an international perspective. Meet past IDRC Research Award winners. 4,444 4,444 Ottawa Award winners are considered full-time, non-union IDRC employees for payroll purposes. Benefits include employer contributions to employment insurance, employer health care taxes, the Canada Pension Plan, and paid time off. Salaries range from CA$42,033 to CA$48,659.
Nairobi awardees will be considered temporary employees working on the research awardee pay scale as defined in the Local Employers Handbook. Salaries range from 2,032,072 to 3,204,520 KES
All winners are also supported with partial travel and research expenses.
Who can apply
For the awards based in Ottawa:
Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and students from low or middle-income countries, enrolled in a Canadian university with a work permit valid for full-time work (37.5 hours per week) in Canada until 30 April 2024.
For the Global Health award based in Nairobi, the candidates must hold Kenyan citizenship.
Students who are enrolled in or who have completed a master's program from a recognized university within the last three years
Preference will be given to students who have completed a master's degree
Eligibility requirements
1. Applied for only one research award recipient opportunity
2. Proposed research must focus on one or more developing countries on the OECD DAC list of ODA recipients
3. Field research component cannot be more than 3 months
4. Research cannot be proposed in countries with Government of Canada travel security advisories to "Avoid all travel"
5. Specific eligibility criteria of each research theme must be satisfied
