Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Student Eligibility
Research students
You must be under 35 years of age and a college graduate (includes prospective graduates). Or you must have completed 16 years of schooling
Teacher training students
You must be under 35 years of age and a graduate of a college or teacher training college. You must have at least five years of active experience as a teacher in a primary, secondary or teacher training college in your country. (Please note that college and university teachers currently in active service are not considered for this scholarship).
Undergraduate students
You must be at least 17 and under 25 years of age and have completed 12 years of school education or have completed courses in a school comparable to a high school (includes prospective graduates).
Japanese studies students
You must be from 18 to 30 years old. You must be enrolled as undergraduate students in faculties or schools which major in Japanese language or Japanese culture in a university outside Japan at the time when they come to Japan and must be enrolled in the home institution at the time when they return to their home countries.
College of technology students
You must be at least 17 and under 25 years of age and have completed school education comparable to a high school (a minimum of 11 years beginning in primary school) education (includes prospective graduates).
Specialized training college students
You must be at least 17 and under 25 years of age and have completed 12 years of schooling or have completed school education comparable to a Japanese high school (includes prospective graduates).
Scholarships
In Japan, only a few scholarships cover all the costs of study; and most aim to cover just a portion of the student's living expenses and tuition fees. Therefore, calculate the total expenses of studying in Japan to create a financial plan that does not rely solely on scholarships but rather your own funds as well
You can submit your application by dropping it at the security gate at the Embassy of Japan or send it via courier. On the envelope, the attention should be to the Cultural Section then write your name. Submission must be done physically either by post or by hand though, considering the existing Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), online (Email) submission would be accepted only when applicants have contacted and informed the Embassy before the submission. EMAIL SUBMISSION WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

* Please be sure to thoroughly read the Application Guidelines before submitting the necessary documents for your application. APPLICATION WITH INSUFFICIENT DOCUMENTS WILL NOT BE EXAMINED. When sending hard copies, please use paper clips only, no staples.
Only short-listed applicants will be contacted by the Embassy by mid-June 2023. Written examinations are tentatively scheduled for June 2023. It is strongly advised to prepare for the examinations by going through the past exams papers which can be obtained from the link below:

Important Note: Although application documents will be accepted at this time, due to the COVID -19 situation, there are possibilities that the selection process will be cancelled or applicants will not be able to come to Japan even after being selected as scholarship students.
