Duties and Responsibilities
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
UNEP’s Communication Division raises the organization's profile, informs policies, and influences attitudes, behaviour and decisions related to the environment worldwide.
UNEP’s communication, mobilisation, and advocacy goals are supported from the engagement of prominent personalities. UNEP achieves this through a robust roster of influencers, including Goodwill Ambassadors (GWAs), Advocates and Supporters who have strong popular appeal, wide networks, and popular reach. This consultancy is to contribute to further developing and improving of UNEP’s influencers’ programme.
Under the direct supervision of UNEP’s Chief of Public Advocacy and Communication and with guidance and support of Ambassador Relations Coordinator, the Consultant will be responsible for the following duties:
• Strategize and deliver a plan of action for 2023 for UNEP’s Influencers’ Programme with the aim of deepening the engagement of Influencers; and achieving greatest impact possible for UNEP priority areas.
• Establish a structure and streamline procedures for continuous growth and development of UNEP’s Influencers’ Programme for identification and recruitment of new active and reputable personalities and sustained and impactful engagement of existing influencers with a special focus on building diversity and meaningful contribution of the Programme at the global, regional, and national levels.
• Develop and input in delivering a two-years operational plan, with clear milestones, qualifiable results, and increased communication impact in terms of generating uptake of UNEP’s Work through engagement of Influencers.
• Develop and deliver concepts for leveraging partnerships and mobilising resources through engagement of UNEP influencers in support of UNEP’s objectives.
• Develop monitoring and evaluation tools and reporting templates for substantiating and communicating results achieved through engagement of UNEP’s influencers.
• Create opportunities and execute placement of short- and long-lead media involving UNEP’s influencers in priority markets.
• Liaise and produce responses as needed and where there is involvement of influencers with relevant colleagues on crisis communications and risk management
• Prepare an information and briefing toolkit, which includes media and PR material for activities, to support engagement and participation of UNEP’s influencers
Qualifications/special skills
Advanced University Degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, public information, marketing, public relations, or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
At least 5-year work experience in public information, communication, programme management or related field is required
Experience in international environment is an advantage
Prior experience in dealing with high-profile stakeholders, Goodwill Ambassadors and /or prominent personalities is desired.
Languages
English and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English (both Oral and written) is required. Working knowledge in French Language is an added advantage.
